• A main goal of therapy is to assist children & adults, with mild problems to become more active and independent but also to assist carers to manage those with more severe disabilities in daily life routines.With early therapy, new pathways in the brain can be opened up so that optimum function can occur.• A holistic approach is taken looking at the person as a whole i.e. physical, cognitive, social, communication• The aim being to improve posture, movement and sensory-motor development within their ability level.• Ways to enhance more participation in the community.• Practice, having fun and being motivated are key factors when learning new skills.

Practicing mid-line and upright standing to improve posture and balance
This boy has very severe cerebral palsy. Here we are working on his head and trunk control.
While his mother works to help him push on his arms and lift his head up, his brother joins in with the activity.
Although he will never walk independently, we are giving him the experience of movement and stepping which he enjoys.
Moving the gym ball around, he is learning to keep his head up and sit with help.
This girl spends a lot of time lying on the floor. Her legs and body are very stiff.
We are working her up into sitting so she can learn to sit and look around.
Lengthening out her arms to the side helps her posture and movement.
As she is less stiff it is possible to stand her at a chair and while looking at a book. The family now know how to stand her at home.
This woman has had a stroke which has made the left side of her body stiff and weak.
Kate is working with the woman to get more weight over onto the left weak side to improve her trunk balance and ability to reach out with her stiff arm.
More advanced work in standing for balance and weight bearing onto her left leg.
Progressing from a walker she is beginning to use a stick and take her first steps with close supervision.
